History
Setniker Farms was founded in the early 40’s by Frank and Norma Setniker. The farm originally started as a small dairy located near Hillsboro. In the early 50’s it expanded to McMinnville. As the years past, our focus changed from a dairy to a crop farm that grew small grains such as wheat, oats and barley. In the 60’s the dairy was sold and we purchased our farm in Independence. We began to grow fruit crops including strawberries, pears, prunes, peaches, cherries, and black berries, as well as pole beans, wheat, clover seed and hazelnuts in the 70s. During the 80s we continued growing lots of different fruit crops and putting in our own cherry processing line on site in independence. As the 80s progressed the cherry production moved to other areas of the country and our production ceased. However we began growing Raspberries and peppermint. During this time we built our mint distillery. During the 90s Fruit production valley wide was decreasing and moving to cheaper production areas. Our fruit acres began declining and by the end of the decade we had no fruit left. Grass seed helped fill the void left by the decreasing fruit acreage. We began baling our grass seed straw for export to Asian markets as well. As we began the 2000s we continued growing more grass seed and our mint acreage declined. During this decade we built a state of the art seed cleaning facility on the farm in independence to process our own grass seed. We began growing more acres of vegetables for processing. Currently our acres are a balance of seed crops, mint, and vegetables as well as hazelnuts, Christmas trees, wheat, camelina and canola. In the past few years we built an oil seed crushing facility on farm to process canola and camelina for biodiesel and make meal to feed our beef. |
